For two weeks in a row we've featured beautiful Gouache paintings done by Trinidadian artist Brian Wong Won. Generally known as the 'Carnival Artist' for his ability to translate the essence of The Greatest Show on Earth onto canvas, I think we should call him the 'Festival Artist' instead, because he also brings other celebrations (such as Christmas) to life on canvas in a similar manner. I look at that 'Silver Foil Tree' painting above and it reminds me of so many Trini Christmases past. I can't tell you exactly what it is about the painting that tosses me to seasons gone by; I think it just might be the placement of the tree, all alone in the corner of that quaint living room. I recall that it was a big crime to dirty up that room after it was all dressed up, and I remember that only after I was very good and well behaved did I dare to sit by the tree, just to bask in the gleam of those lights (I was also trying to figure out what my gifts were, of course!)... The tree signified weeks of teaming up with family members to finish the decorating, painting, cleaning and such - I guess the colour & warmth of that painting reminds me of how revered and sacred Christmas is to Caribbean people.
Merry Christmas from 'Au Courant in the Caribbean'!!!
