We Heart Cheewah & De Big Yard
Trinidad's resident mural-artist at-large has done it again!
Darren Cheewah, the insanely talented illustrator, graphic artist, tattoo artist, painter, and overall creative guy, has a knack for making the everyday simplicities seem uniquely grandiose...
Think old rum bottles painted in blue, drizzled in silver, wrapped with sinewy strands of wire and adorned with gravely stones. Stick a wax candle in it, and you've got a one-of-a-kind Cheewah candelabra!
Anyways, this time, he's taken his talents to the wall of de Big Yard - the Queen's Park Savannah - for Carnival 09. You've gotta appreciate seeing the Moko Jumbie, The Dame Lorraine, and other traditional Carnival characters being displayed so prominently during the season of the year where they should rightfully reign supreme.
In the past, I recall Cheewah doing something similar on the the wall of old P.S.A. grounds on Long Circular Road. If you're already in Trinidad for Carnival, you've probably seen the mural in person. And if not? Keep an eye out for it as you chip down de road.
