Poshe brings 'Fashion's Night Out' to Jamaica

Has Vogue's Anna Wintour teamed up with Camesha Powell (right)
for a 'Fashion' s Night Out' in Jamaica?

Well, not exactly; I should note that there'll be no Fashion's Night Out (FNO) + Vogue tee shirts or totes, no Anna Wintour making the rounds, and definitely no Andre Leon Talley swooshing his cape around Kingston.

According to Camesha Powell, the designer behind the Poshe label and an endorser of the event, "It's a Jamaica Observer event similar to the American day-after-Thanksgiving shopping holiday, Black Friday."

Held at the StarApples Courtyard this Thursday October 29th, 2009, the event starts at 5pm & ends at 11, and you should expect discounts from the Stanley & Empress Boutique, and from some of Jamaica's freshest and hottest fashion designers. Like Poshe, of course.

Right... So it's actually a mish-mosh of Black Friday (which has nothing to do with the Conde Nast/Vogue Magazine organized FNO, might I add) and the recently held FNO, which was organized as a way to encourage cash strapped fashionistas in International shopping cities like NYC & London to shop, thus lifting the recessionary retail slump.

It's not a bad initiative for the blossoming Jamaican fashion industry to host; the Jamaicans embrace their own designers and champion the growth of the industry like none other in the region. But, really. Is it that hard to come up with another slogan and theme for the event? Especially since it obviously has nothing to do with the original one?

Taking inspiration from the FNO format is no big deal; it's actually great! But 'Fashion's Night Out' says that your event is going to be snapped by Vogue pappers, and that I can then flip through an upcoming issue of the magazine and see what happened that night in Kingston.

Why are you guys going to disappoint me?

Now, I don't know how you're going to pull off wearing hot & clingy leather skirts, gloves and jackets in the blistering Caribbean heat, but in honour of Poshe's Caribbean Fashion Week (CFW) 2009 collection daring collection, I say give it a try!

Created by the Jamaican designer Camesha Powell in 2007, the line's most recent st puts a youthful twist on the classic 'flirty-fierce' combo: glossy, S&M worthy leather pieces, flouncy ruffles and peplum detailing.

The full-on leather skirt does indeed look like a piece from Mortisha Addams' closet, but the restrained leather usage in other instances - chic, fingerless biker gloves - balances out the look.

My favourite? The neat, Chanel-esque jacket that's perfect for the impending chill of another Fall in NYC. See more of the collection on Poshe's Facebook page.
