Caribbean Airlines ( I still prefer the name BWIA!) has been running an online competition for the past few months, as a way to select their new spokesperson.
Open to nationals of all the 30+ Caribbean islands - and even international individuals with a Caribbean lineage - the virtual competition allowed viewers to vote on the uploaded images and video posts of their favourite contestants.
I recall looking at the listing of contestants when I first heard of the competition, and I remember seeing a healthy sprinkle of folks from a variety of islands. So why, pray tell, are the vast majority of finalists from Trinidad & Tobago?
Not a good look at all, especially since the headquarters of Caribbean Airlines is in Trinidad, and the Judges are the usual Trinidadian model/beauty pageant/fashion 'aficionados' like Peter Elias, and Calvin French (no disrespect to Wendy Fitzwilliam; Au Courant still loves you.)
It can't be that Trinidadians were the only ones aware of the competition. Specious, I tell you.
So specious, that although I'm really liking Trini/Canadian Racine Burke, I'm going the other way, casting a vote for the dreadlocked Bajan above, Mia Smith.
The new representative will be selected in a live - presumably online - event at the Carlton Savannah hotel in Trinidad, sometime this month.
