I am such an Anglophile, sometimes...
Growing up in Trinidad, a country that was once a British colony, I've always had a warm place in my heart for some elements of U.K. life. Porridge, proper pronunciation & diction, curios & objects, and above all, children's books!
My favourites were from Enid Blyton. Out of the 800 or so titles about gnomes, intrepid kids and faraway lands that she wrote, the ones that really resonated with me were the 'naughty' ones about incorrigibles -in particular, Amelia Jane & Mister Meddle!
Shown above, Amelia was a very horrid rag doll who terrorized the toy room, and Meddle was a troublesome pixie. The other books that I loved were Circus Days Again from the Galliano Circus series and the Wishing Chair series.
I just stumbled upon the Enid Blyton Society, and although I did feel like an antiquated old biddy for a second, poring over the vintage illustrations and book covers brought back so, so many fantastic memories.
The other classic series that figured into my adolescent life was the American Nancy Drew series; two of my faves are shown above. How could you not love a nosy, smart-as-a-whip chick, who had a cute boyfriend, and her own convertible? Click here for some other Nancy Drew titles.
I feel sorry for the kids of today and tomorrow, those who might never know the sheer comfort and fantasy of tucking away with a good book or two, because they do everything online. These classics are perfect for encouraging a child to read, or as a trip down memory lane for an adult book junkie. Each title is less than $8.00 so select the ones you like, and happy reading.
