All I can say, is "Wow!"
Designed by the AboveGroup team, (Tanya Williams/Design; Alex Smailes/Photography; Ravin Ramkisson/Video) the brand new website for the fashion house of Meiling gives the legendary designer a web presence that delivers on a clear identity with stylish flair.
Melding a full flash/video site with eerie sound effects, and moody, smoky & sultry photography, www.Meilinginc.com is probably the first Caribbean Designer's website to follow in the footsteps of Chanel, Halston, Erin Featherston and other international designers, by embracing the trend of using 'Web Movies' to promote a brand image.
Re-launching the site this past Saturday at the Carlton Savannah hotel in Trinidad with a viewing event, the video was shown to an appreciative crowd; I'm sure the new site will more than launch a 'follow-fashion' trend amongst the designer set - trust me, just keep your eyes open, and you'll see the copycats...
Meiling's aesthetic, by definition, tends to lean towards the ethereal, natural, and easy. So it's no stretch of the imagination to see the designs being brought to life on the other worldy, organic forms of Caribbean Folklore Characters, as depicted by Meiling's models.
In the flash images, Papa Bois (the Ruler of the woods & forest creatures) is slinking along a dusty back road decked out in Meiling's Men collection, Mama D'gleau (a Water spirit) and her nymph-like friends glide their sinewy bodies through a hazy pond, and above, little Douens (spirits of the un-blessed, deceased children) gather together under their copious hats, to hide their damned state.
It's bone chilling and sexy, whilst creating beautiful imagery for Meiling to showcase her designs through. But don't take my word for it; check out the site for yourself!
