When I was a child, most adults I knew kept one of these tiny washing cubes close at hand. A curio, if ever there was one, the Reckitt's Crown Blue is a crystalline laundry square that will make your whites as bright as they'll ever be.
A lesser know application is for 'purifying' clothing, homes, and one's person from the ill-gotten effects of bad luck and witchery, or as we call it in Trinidad, maljo.
Some people go even further, placing the resulting blue water in pans around the home to protect from the evil-intentioned gazes of strangers; others take 'cleansing' baths with their trusty ol' cube of Reckitt's - to remove the jumbies that's obviously bothering them...
I can't attest one way or the other to the powers of 'Blue' (the common name for a cube of Reckitt's), but I can tell you what people attribute to the colour.
The Greeks use blue on their 'evil eye' charms, blue is the colour associated with the Virgin Mary, it's also said to be the colour of peaceable and open communication, and apparently, spiritualists have been using it to ward away evil for eons...
Might come in handy today?
