The 'Rhythyms of Jamaican Fashion' at Island Couture!

Are you in Jamaica for January 31st? If so, can you go check out this month's showing of the Island Couture collective - pretty please? Obviously, I'm still huddled up in chilly NYC, so I'm passing on this personal invitation to you.

It's a close-up look at some of the most cutting-edge and well-executed pieces from emerging Jamaican fashion designers - classics from Barry Moncrieffe, swimwear by Blaazin Designs, casual wear by Yaad Trendz, and high fashion accessories by Reve Jewellery and Cinderella Hats included.

And while you're at it, take in the sounds of guest artiste Tessanne Chin - that sultry Hideaway jam of hers is still one of my faves! I've got to thank Keneea Linton (who, by the way, is one of the best rising Jamaican - scratch that - International designers) for giving me the heads-up. Linton's part of the Jamaican Fashion & Apparel Cluster, which is the group that hosts the Island Couture showcase.

In a nutshell, the cluster, "Is a support project of the Private Sector Development Programme (PSDP) which is co-funded by the European Union and the Government of Jamaica." In addition, it's supported and guided by the Jamaica Business Development Centre (JBDC).

The Jamaica Fashion and Apparel Cluster facilitates the growth and development of new and existing micro, small and medium enterprises in the industry. The Cluster also promotes the collective interest of its members and has the ultimate goal of improving the competitiveness of Jamaica's Fashion and Apparel Industry.

You got to give it to the Jamaicans for banding together and pushing their artistes, man! It's admirable that they're not waiting for the fashion world en-masse to come to the islands, Instead, they're bringing the island flair to the world. Well done.

L.M.N. Harris.
