Tale of 'The Bolt & The Torpedo' - Hats off to Usain Bolt & Richard Thompson!

Ever so often I venture off the Caribbean Fashion & Style tip to make a passing comment on newsworthy happenings. Today I definitely digress to say - What a fantastic Olympic 100m mens finals!

Double hats off to the Jamaican sprint phenom Usain Bolt, the new Track World Champ and Olympic 100m gold medalist, and of course, to the Trinidadian dark horse of the races, Richard 'Torpedo' Thompson who copped the silver!

In magnificent form, the guys put down a double surprise today; everyone knows that Bolt is speedy, but to break away from the pack, running with a shoe lace untied, pulling up long before even crossing the finishing line AND managing to still clock a 9:69 to win the gold?! Fantastic.

And then, in a more than valiant showing, Torpedo Thompson maintained his standard to stave off the US' third place Walter Dix and the rest of the field, to swoosh in with an incredible 9:89 (his personal best), bringing the silver medal back to Trinidad & Tobago in the process. It's even more fantastic on a personal level, since most folks had only just learned of Thompson's talent right before the Olympics (shameful, I know)...

To Bolt: congratulations! The world is waiting to see what happens when you decide to run, full out, without pulling up - a gold medal with a 9:40 or under time, maybe?

And to Thompson: Please, please don't let the show-off folks 'tief up yuh head' and dazzle you with nonsense. Focus on the track and keep blazing - Bolt will have to put up a damn good fight if he's going to break away from you next time.

LMN Harris.
